Nobel Prize laureate, physician, and medical missionary, Albert Schweitzer advocated that each individual personally search and see if there is not some place where they may invest their humanity. In our modern, technological, information age it does not take much time or effort to view the lives of those less fortunate than ourselves and to be reminded of our own personal blessings in life. It is through this lens that Dr. Ridgway volunteers his services to victims of violence and poverty through the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery’s national FACE TO FACE program, Global Surgical Outreach, and Seattle Alliance Outreach. Through each organization, Dr. Ridgway is able to invest himself locally and internationally in providing care to those who are less fortunate as well as helping to educate local physicians in their heartfelt desires to serve their own communities.
Dr. James M. Ridgway is also one of the founding members of the Swedish Medical Center’s Facial Reconstruction Team. The team is an assembly of local experts from multiple surgical and medical specialties brought together with the common goal of helping patients who have suffered considerable facial disfigurement and who are currently without any medical care or resources.
Inspired by personal events regarding breast cancer in his family, Dr. Ridgway founded the Larrabee Center’s LATISSE® Eyelash Program in 2010. The pro-bono project dedicated to the treatment of breast cancer survivors is aimed at helping cancer patients return to their previous lives and restore a sense of self. Each patient that has been enrolled is directly taken under Dr. Ridgway’s sole care. The project has grown from the collaboration with our medical colleagues at the Swedish Cancer Institute and with the early help of nurses Rhonda Jack and Maryln Wilson. Patients are enrolled in a 16-week program for the restoration of hair loss around the eyes and brow complex. The program has been described as a “bow on top of the gift of the life” that has been provided by the Swedish Oncology teams. We are grateful for the generous contributions from Allergan, Coloratura, and Jeri Morgan-Reiner as well as the patients who are so generous in their trust and inspire us with their strength.
